The Beginner’s Guide To Allegiant

Everything you need to know before Allegiant comes out tomorrow.

What is it?
Allegiant is the third film in the Divergent series based on the YA book of the same name. Divergent (2014) was the first film, followed by Insurgent (2015). It takes place in a dystopian society in which people are split into five factions based on their most valued characteristics.

Do I have to watch the others to watch this one?
Only if you want to understand what’s happening in the film when you watch it.

Seriously? Can’t you just do a summary?
*Sigh* fine, a summary… Like I said, this is a dystopian society where people are split into five factions: Erudite (the intelligent), Amity (the kind), Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless) & Dauntless (the brave). You’re born into a faction but when you reach the age of 16 you take a test that tells you which you’re best suited to and you’re able to change factions.

Our main character, Tris, takes the test and discovers that she’s Divergent – she doesn’t fit into just one faction – she hides this fact but leaves Abnegation to join Dauntless. She uncovers a conspiracy in which the Erudite leader is attempting to kill all Divergents and with her super sexy, brooding boyfriend, Four, she stops this happening. End Divergent.

Now, Insurgent: after trying to kill everyone the Erudite leader found a box that could only be opened by a Divergent – not just any Divergent, but Tris. After bouncing from faction to faction in hiding, Tris and Four find solace with the Factionless (think homeless people) and shock twist the leader of the Factionless is Four’s absentee mother. Romance, comedy, angst… Tris turns herself in and opens the box. It turns out that their entire existence was an experiment and the Divergents are the success of that experiment.

Umm, thanks. Not that that wasn’t great and all but can I stream the films anywhere?
Rude. However, both Divergent and Insurgent are available on Amazon Prime Instant Video.

Who’s in this film?
The protagonist is played by Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) and Four is played by Theo James (The Inbetweeners Movie). Other names you might recognise include: Zoe Kravitz, Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Jeff Daniels, Naomi Watts, Octavia Spencer and Ray Stevenson.

Any on-set drama?
Sadly I don’t have anything really exciting for you but this series is working their way through directors like crazy: the fourth film (to be released next year) will be helmed by the series’ third director.

Wait, fourth film? I thought the books were a trilogy?
Don’t even get me started. For some reason, they’re splitting the third book into two films. That reason is most likely money but hey, maybe they just… nope, I’ve got nothing.

Is it going to be any good?
Umm… the reviews are mixed: as a fan of the books – you probably won’t love it. They change a lot of the source material and the overall message kind of gets lost in a jumble of irrelevant action sequences. However, as somebody who’s never looked at the books, it might be great. I’ll let you know my verdict tomorrow when I watch it.
