Everything you need to know before Daredevil Season 2 comes out tomorrow.
What is it?
Season 1 of Daredevil was the first of the Marvel Netflix original shows. It takes place in the MCU so it shares continuity with all of those other great Marvel properties like The Avengers. The first season received fantastic reviews and season 2 is to be released on Netflix tomorrow.
This is embarrassing but, who exactly is Daredevil?
Not to worry my friend, plenty of people tried to scrub their brains of anything Daredevil after Ben Affleck’s 2003 portrayal of the character. Daredevil is the superhero alter-ego of Matt Murdock, a guy from Hell’s Kitchen: he was blinded in a childhood accident which made all of his other senses incredibly sensitive. As an adult, he becomes a lawyer-by-day-masked-vigilante-by-night.
Do I have to watch the first season before this one?
Why is this even a question? Yes, yes you do.
But, like, could you just give me the Cliff Notes?
I’m too good to you: I really am. Okay, so in Season 1 of Daredevil Matt is secretly fighting criminals at night whilst opening a new law firm with his best friend Foggy Nelson – their first client is a woman named Karen and after winning her case, she begins working for them.
Matt gets injured and is saved by a nurse, Clair Temple, who removes his mask and sees who he is – fortunately she’s a good person and helps him out a lot throughout the season. Bad things are happening: people are murdered in a multitude of ways – the decapitation by car door was pretty memorable. Sure, there’s the Russian mob and Yakuza but our main villain is Kingpin, a.k.a. Wilson Fisk.
It takes the majority of the season for Matt to work out that Fisk is behind most of the terrible going-ons but then there’s an amazing final fight scene where Matt is victorious.
Even I know that that was a terrible summary but by all means, go stream the first season on Netflix.
Sorry, did you say ‘decapitation by car door’? I thought this was in the MCU…
This show, and the Netflix/Marvel shows in general (see Jessica Jones) have a much darker, grittier tone than the MCU movies. It’s a bit of an adjustment but they really are fantastic. At least, they’re fantastic if you’re not squeamish.
Who’s in it?
The cast for this show is great: Charlie Cox (Stardust) plays Daredevil with Eldon Henson (The Mighty Ducks) as Foggy Nelson and Rosario Dawson (Rent) as Claire.
Your “summary” made it seem like everything was pretty settled. So what exactly’s happening for the second season?
Whilst I don’t appreciate the quotation marks around ‘summary’, that’s a great question – mainly because I really like talking about this. This season we see the return of the Yakuza and an entirely new villain in the form of Punisher (played by Jon Bernthal). If that wasn’t enough, they’re introducing the character of Elektra (played by Élodie Yung). This season looks even better than the last and if you don’t want to take my word for it, check out the final trailer:
