The Beginner’s Guide To X-Men: Apocalypse

Everything you need to know before X-Men: Apocalypse comes out tomorrow.

What is it?
Well, X-Men: Apocalypse is the ninth film in the X-Men film series (the most recent of which was Deadpool) but it is the third of the prequel subsection of the franchise.

That sounds like a lot of films to catch up on…
To be honest, you probably don’t need to watch any of the others in order to understand this one. Although if you really didn’t want to miss anything then the only two that you have to watch are X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past.

I think I have an idea from the title but, what’s it about?
It’s not actually about the apocalypse, just some dude called Apocalypse. Although he’s an incredibly powerful mutant who wants to “cleanse” mankind so maybe it is the apocalypse. Well, here’s the official synopsis:

“Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.”

Who’s in it?
So many people. The X-Men are a team and they’re finally re-introducing a lot of old favourites as well as the ones that we’ve already seen in the prequels which means that the cast and the number of characters is huge. You can expect to see: Professor X, Magento, Mystique, Cyclops, Storm, Psylocke, Angel, Nightcrawler, Jean Grey, Havoc, Beast and potentially even more.

You can’t just say “potentially even more” – dude, I seriously want to know!
Well, there could be a cameo from a certain fan-favourite but some people consider it a spoiler, so naturally that character appears in the trailer:

How are the reviews?
In a word? Bad. I could say that they’re mixed but the amount of good in that mix is getting smaller and quieter every day. Still, the X-Men films haven’t gone too wrong in the past (I like to pretend that the Wolverine films don’t exist) so how bad could it be?
