Wait, What Happened? || Geek News

~RIP Robert Vaughn~

There has been plenty happening in the world of geekdom of the last couple of days and it can all be a little bit overwhelming sometimes. You may even find yourself asking: wait, what happened? If so, I have got you covered.

Now You See Me 3 Hires New Writers

Image result for Now You See me 2If the fact that a Now You See Me 3 movie is in the works was news to you then you’re not alone. After the second movie tanked this past summer, nobody was expecting a follow up. However, it seems that the studio had been so enthused by the success of the original that they immediately signed off on two sequels which brings us to where we are now. Fortunately, they are making some changes with this installment: Neil Widener and Gavin James will be writing this film. The duo are relatively new but hopefully they can breathe this franchise back to life. At the moment the main cast are said to be returning for the third film.

Arrowverse Crossover

The Arrowverse is alive and kicking. All of the shows (Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow) have come back strong this autumn and now we can now look forward to a four-day crossover event. In previous years we have seen The Flash and Arrow crossover but in just three weeks time all four of the shows will meet. The CW posted a little teaser which you can check out below:

Cloak And Dagger Delayed

Image result for freeform

In April, Freeform announced that they were developing a new series based on the Marvel comic: Cloak and Dagger. We had hoped to see it air early in the new year but the show’s release has been delayed to Winter 2018 as the first script undergoes rewrites. I have never been a massive fan of Freeform (I imagine that I’m not their target demographic) but as they lose their biggest shows, Pretty Little Liars and Switched at Birth, they are running out of successful content.

Are you still interested in the Now You See Me franchise? Are four shows too many for a crossover? Do you care about the Cloak and Dagger series? Let me know in the comments.

Wait, What Happened? || Geek News

With one week until the US elections, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are dominating the news cycle and as somebody in the UK who is largely unaffected by the results, I’m sitting back and loving all of it. However, there is other news – cooler news. If you don’t know what I’m talking about and you find yourself asking: wait, what happened? I’ve got you covered.

The Defenders Run Will Be 8 Episodes

Marvel have a pretty solid formula in both their films and series but they are straying from it with the upcoming series: The Defenders. Whilst their other Netflix series have had 13 episode seasons, The Defenders will only be 8 episodes long.

I have mixed feelings on this. Obviously I want as much of this show as possible but if they only have 8 episodes of material then I wouldn’t want it stretched out to 13 and risk losing quality. If that dampened your excitement for the show maybe these new set photos will cheer you up.

Disney Developing Live-Action Snow White Movie

Image result for snow whiteDisney are roaring ahead with their live-action remakes and the next classic in their sights is Snow WhiteThe Girl on the Train screenwriter, Erin Cressida Wilson, is in negotiations to write the script with Benk Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land) attached as songwriters. The movie will include some of the original music but new songs are also being written.

In recent years there have been two separate attempts at a live-action Snow White in Mirror, Mirror and Snow White & the Huntsman but neither really captured the magic of Disney’s animated version. Hopefully Disney won’t fall short of their own original.

The Flash Loses Its Second Director

Image result for rick famuyiwaRick Famuyiwa has become the second director this year to leave ‘The Flash’ movie over creative differences. I’m trying to have faith in the DCEU, I really am, but they make it so difficult. I mean, what are Warner Bros. doing to these directors? Just let them make a nice movie!

The film was set to begin production early next year and was slated for a March 2018 release but whilst Warner Bros. are yet to release a statement, it seems unlikely that that will happen.

Do you wish that the Defenders was longer? Are you tired of Disney remakes? Do you think that The Flash movie will get its act together in time for a 2018 release? Let me know in the comments.

Marvel vs. DC: TV Edition

It’s the infinity question: Marvel or DC? Obviously the answer is normally Marvel but that’s just in print and on the big screen. It is now the golden age of television and the two comic giants have not slacked in getting their content out on TV. As of right now, there are more than ten Marvel/DC shows airing and even more in development. The question is: who’s better?

Marvel: Netflix

With the recent release of Luke Cage (full review here), the Marvel Netflix series are in the spotlight at the moment. This group contains: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and in five months, Iron Fist.

Of all the comic book shows, these are the most unique in terms of format. Thanks to Netflix, these 13 episode seasons are all released at once which has the awesome effect of being able to watch them in one sitting – almost like a 13 hour movie.

They are praised for their grittier, darker tone in comparison to the wider MCU but what I love most about these is the characters. TV allows character development on a much larger scale than film but even by that standard, it feels like these dive into the stories of everybody: heroes and villains alike. Also, Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple is my favourite thing.

My only gripe is something that Netflix proudly claims: this is “event television”. It only comes around twice a year and if you watch them immediately (like myself) you’re left with nothing for 6 months.

DC: The CW

The CW is home to the Arrowverse – The Flash, Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl – but many people don’t know that the show, iZombie, is also based on a DC comic.

Network television is a far departure from Netflix which means that these shows aren’t allowed to be as violent or deal with heavy issues. The general tone of them is much lighter but they all have their own unique stamps which make them really good at being what they are.

My personal favourites are Supergirl and iZombie – Supergirl is unabashedly feminist and maintains this unbelievably bright, cheerful aesthetic. It could come off as cheesy but the character dynamics are fantastic and the actors (particularly Melissa Benoist) really sell the story.

Unfortunately, without the space to explore any more substantial themes, some of the plots can become needlessly convoluted and no amount of good acting can make you believe the stakes that are being presented to you.

Marvel: ABC

Whilst Agents of Shield is technically the only Marvel series currently on ABC, I live in constant denial that Agent Carter got cancelled so I’m just going to include it in this category.

When Agents of Shield began it seemed like it was just fan service: “don’t worry guys, Coulson’s okay!”, but it has evolved since then and I think that it’s finally finding its own feet in it’s third season. That is largely helped by the fact that they now have a later air time which means that they can get a bit more violent.

Agent Carter never had that issue: it is a show that has known exactly what it’s about since the beginning . These shows are a nice reminder that whilst we watch the superheroes, there are ordinary folks that do just as much, probably more.

DC: Fox & AMC

Finally DC have Gotham and Lucifer on Fox, and Preacher on AMC.

I’m not going to lie: I think that Gotham is the definition of trash-television but for some reason I continue to watch it.

Preacher is much more interesting. I fell in love with the concept but my interest dwindled as the first season played out. I think that these are the riskier, more experimental ideas and whilst they aren’t perfect, I love the fact that these networks are taking a chance on something different.

So, those are our shows. Which is better?

Marvel! I mean, come on, I’ll be loyal until the day that I die but I genuinely believe that the quality of their shows is miles ahead of their DC counter-parts. DC might have more breadth but that isn’t always a good thing.

What do you think? Marvel or DC? I am completely biased? Let me know in the comments.

Weekly Round-Up || Geek News

Happy Sunday, I hope your week was all kinds of awesome. From trailers to casting and pushed back release dates, there is just so much to share so let’s get started.

Best Piece Of News

Donald Glover has officially been cast in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Remember when the Internet was ready to storm Marvel headquarters, complete with flaming torches and pitchforks to get Glover cast as Spidey? Well they finally got what they wanted – except not. Tom Holland is still playing Spider-Man (and based on Captain America: Civil War he’s going to be great) but Donald Glover has an unknown role in the film.

Worst Piece Of News

The sequel to the surprising hit, The Lego Movie, has been pushed back from a May 2018 release to February 2019 by Warner Bros. Whilst this is definitely sad news, The Lego Batman Movie will hit screens early next year and help to bridge the gap plus the extra time could mean that film will be even better. Optimism.

Most Bizarre Piece Of News

Gotham is re-casting the role of Poison Ivy for their upcoming third season. Why are they doing this? Well that would be because the current actress, Clare Foley, is 14 years old and they didn’t want it to be super-weird when they began to sexualise the character.

And Everything Else…

  • Pete’s Dragon Trailer
  • Helen Mirren In Fast 8

Are you upset that Donald Glover isn’t Spider-Man? Can The Lego Movie sequel live up to the original? What do you think of the Gotham re-casting? Let me know in the comments.

Weekly Round-Up || Geek News

Happy Sunday! It’s Tony’s day for all of you theatre geeks (that’s me, I’m the theatre geek) and it’s also the day where we go back over the week’s news and talk about what happened.

Best Piece Of News

Hayley Atwell, a.k.a Peggy Carter herself, is not on-board with Cap’s new romance. Despite all of the amazing elements that make up Captain America: Civil War and make it Marvel’s best film to date, there was one weird story-line that they tried to push. I am, of course, talking about Steve kissing Sharon Carter mere hours after burying her aunt who, incidentally, was the love of his life. Fans weren’t happy about it and Atwell had this to say in an interview with IGN:

“Well, first of all she’d be turning over in her grave. She’d be like ‘no.’ And she’d inject herself with the blue serum and become a super villain. She’d break out of her coffin and ground [Sharon]. She’d ground her. Then she’d kick Steve’s ass as well.”

Worst Piece Of News

This week was actually kind of great so I’m scraping the bottom of the barrel here. It was revealed that Superman was being cast for a role in the second season of Supergirl. The show purposely avoided showing the Man of Steel’s face in the first season because this show isn’t about him. There is a theme that runs throughout the show of Kara trying to prove herself to be a hero and there is a worry that Superman could overshadow that. With that said, Kara is such a fantastic and established character that I don’t think it would happen at this point.

Most Bizarre Piece Of News

In this week’s episode of What the hell is the DCEU up to now? the Justice League movie was re-titled. The film has gone from Justice League: Part 1 to… Justice League. I mean, I don’t… Well, it happened. This could suggest that they’re slowing down a little bit with their plans and perhaps in the wake of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, they’ve decided to try their hands at slightly less convoluted plots.

And Everything Else…

  • Zootopia Hits $1 Billion
  • John Boyega In Pacific Rim 2
  • Legend Of Tarzan Trailer
  • Legends of Tomorrow Adds Vixen
  • New Hogwarts Image
  • First Look At Pixar Short
  • China Saves Warcraft

Do you believe the Sharon/Steve romance? Did you want to see Superman’s face? Are you still holding on to hope for the DCEU? Let me know in the comments.

What’s New? || Geek News

Happy Thursday everybody, we’ve got news from Disney and The CW amongst others so let’s get right into it.

New The Legend Of Tarzan Trailer

The Legend Of Tarzan comes out in cinemas next month and the latest trailer is nothing short of epic. It looks like we’re going to get a very different side of a story that we’re all familiar with and the fact that this film stars Christoph Waltz and Samuel L. Jackson only makes it seem like it’s going to be better. If you haven’t seen the latest trailer, you can watch it below:

Legends of Tomorrow Adds Vixen As Series Regular

The CW series, Legends of Tomorrow, is adding a new hero to their roster: Vixen. Vixen has had her own web-series on the network and even appeared in Arrow this past season where she proved herself to be a good character in her own right. However, if you loved what you’ve seen of her so far that doesn’t guarantee that you’ll like her in Legends of Tomorrow. The actress, Megalyn Echikunwoke, will not be reprising the role but thanks to time travel antics we will see an earlier version of the character. With Wentworth Miller’s Captain Cold now gone Vixen could fill up his space on the team.

First Image Of Hogwarts

The first previews of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child took place on Tuesday and the official Twitter account of the play tweeted out the first image of Hogwarts. It looks different to what I would have imagined but stunning, nonetheless. You can see that picture below.

First Look At New Pixar Short

If you’re a fan of Pixar then you know that with every feature film they also release a short. The short film that will be accompanying Finding Dory next month is called Piper and Pixar have just shared the first images. According to the studio, the film: “tells the story of a hungry sandpiper hatchling who ventures from her nest for the first time to dig for food by the shoreline”.

That’s it today but there will even more news on Saturday. Until then:

Do you prefer the classic Disney Tarzan? What are your thoughts on the Hogwarts set? Are you a fan of the Pixar shorts? Let me know in the comments.

What’s New? || Geek News

Happy Tuesday, ZootopiaJustice LeaguePacific Rim… there’s just too much to talk about today so let’s get right into it.

Zootopia Passes $1 Billion

Zootopia has officially passed the $1 billion mark at the box office and is the fourth animated movie to ever do so. The film was a gorgeous imagination of an all-animal metropolis and I loved it (you can read our review here). As much as we seem to be having a problem with sequels that nobody wants at the moment, this is one world that I would like to re-visit in the future.

Justice League Re-Titled

The upcoming Justice League film has now been re-titled. What is that new title? Wait for it… Justice League. Yeah, it’s called Justice League. It was previously called Justice League Part 1 which raises the question of what has changed? Will it no longer be a two-parter and is this evidence that Warner Bros. are finally noticing that their DCEU is crumbling all around them?

Hayley Atwell Is Not A Fan Of Cap’s New Romance

Captain America: Civil War was easily Marvel’s best film to date but there was one moment that felt very off. Captain America kisses Sharon Carter, niece of Peggy Carter, mere hours after Peggy’s funeral. A lot of fans did not like it and apparently neither did Peggy Carter herself, Hayley Atwell. During an interview with IGN she had this to say on the subject:

“Well, first of all she’d be turning over in her grave. She’d be like ‘no.’ And she’d inject herself with the blue serum and become a super villain. She’d break out of her coffin and ground [Sharon]. She’d ground her. Then she’d kick Steve’s ass as well.”

John Boyega Cast In Pacific Rim 2

John Boyega has landed the role of the protagonist of the sequel to the popular blockbuster, Pacific Rim. The film will begin production later this year and Boyega will play the son of Idris Elba’s character from the first film.

Superman Will Appear In Supergirl

If you watched the first season of Supergirl on CBS then you would have noticed that the Man of Steel appeared but never showed his face. Going into season 2, it has been confirmed that Superman will reveal himself. He will appear in the first two episodes of the season and casting has already begun. A lot of people are hoping that Smallville‘s Tom Welling will reprise the role but there is currently no news.

That’s it today but come back on Thursday for even more news. Until then:

Do you want a Zootopia sequel? Are you excited to see more of John Boyega? Who do you want to be cast as Superman? Let me know in the comments.
