Reasons To Be Excited In 2017

By all accounts, 2016 was a rough year. Fortunately, 2017 promises to be a lot better – or at the very least that’s what people are saying and blind faith is currently preferable to painful realism.

At the very least, in our geeky, little bubble, there are plenty of reasons to be excited about the forthcoming year – so many, in fact, that narrowing it down to 17 was a challenge but that is what has happened. Here are 17 things to get excited about this year.

Wonder Woman (2 June)

This is the first time that I’ve truly been excited for a project by the DCEU and I’m really hoping that they don’t screw it up. Just give us a female hero and let her be as bad-ass as she was originally written to be.

Beauty & The Beast (17 March)

Disney classic, music from my childhood, Emma Watson: what isn’t there to love about this movie? Even Gaston looks good (in a he-seems-to-be-a-more-well-rounded-character kind of way, don’t worry – it looks like he’s still a total bastard).

Sense8 (5 May)

After the Christmas special at the end of December, I’m absolutely buzzing for this new season. Sense8 is hope and light but it’s also painful and terribly, terribly sad at times. Essentially, it’s the best thing being broadcast at the moment.

Spider-Man: Homecoming (7 July)

Sure, it’s the third reboot of this hero’s franchise but he’s still my favourite and I still can’t wait to see him again.

Cars 3 (14 July)

Never in a million years would I have thought that any member of the Cars franchise would be making it onto a list like this but… never say never. The first teaser trailer got me hooked and now I absolutely have to see it.

Coco (8 December)

I can’t talk about Cars 3 and miss out the other Pixar release for this year. Not a lot of people are talking about Coco at the moment but it’s about the Mexican Day of the Dead and that alone has me very interested. Plus, it’s Pixar – it’s going to be fantastic.

Orange Is The New Black, Season 5 (June)

The last two episodes of the most recent season of Orange Is The New Black were viewed behind a curtain of tears which is basically the highest praise from me. They ended on a cliffhanger that I couldn’t stop thinking about for days. Dammit, now I’m thinking about it again.

Star Trek: Discovery (May)

I am a part of a new generation of Star Trek fans that jumped onboard after the Pine movies. That huge market is probably one of the main reasons that they decided to launch a new series and I am very grateful for that.

The Oscars (26/2)

Th glitz, the glamour, the terrible jokes: I live for this award ceremony. It’s the one night of the year that I can successfully pull an all-nighter so that I can watch the entire show all the way from England.

Stranger Things (TBC)

I don’t know where they’re going to go from the first season but I am more than happy to find out.

Justice League (17 November)

My hopes for this movie are slightly lower than those for Wonder Woman but I’m trying to stay optimistic. Most of the characters seem great (with the exception of Batfleck) and if Warner Bros. can get their act together, this could be something amazing.

Hamilton, London (21/11)

I’ve adored this musical for the last year and it is finally coming to London! I won’t be able to afford tickets but at least I’ll be able to walk past the theatre…

Iron Fist (17 March)

Judging by Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage, this show is going to be amazing. What’s more, it’s the final piece of the puzzle before we get to…

The Defenders (TBC)

I love what Marvel are doing with their Netflix series and this seems like it’s going to be beyond amazing.

Star Wars VIII (15 December)

My appreciation for the Star Wars franchise is an even more recent development than my enjoyment of Star Trek. For the first time, I will be waiting with anticipation alongside the other fanboys and fangirls.

Fast & Furious 8 (14 April)

I’m not going to pretend that these movies mean anything more to me than 2 hours of ridiculous stunts and cheesy one-liners but sometimes the world needs crazy stunts and cheesy one-liners.

Logan (2 March)

Is it weird that I feel a little bit scared of this movie? Like I know it’s going to be brilliant but I think that if Logan dies, a little part of my heart may also die.

So those are the 17 things that I am most looking forward to in 2017.

What are you looking forward to? Is there anything on my list that has you pointedly unenthused? Let me know in the comments.

What’s New? || Geek News

Goooood morning, I hope you’re having a wonderful Thursday. If you’re not then I’m sure reading about all the things that have happened in the last couple of days will cheer you up. Or it won’t but either way that’s what I going to talk about now.

Iron Fist Casting

Iron Fist will be the last of the Marvel Netflix series before they all team up in The Defenders and already this week we’ve seen the release of set images featuring Finn Jones’ Danny Rand. This week we heard casting news regarding a bunch of Meachums – David Wenham as Harold Meachum, Jessica Stroup as Joy Meachum and Tom Pelphrey as Ward Meachum. As this is a spoiler-free zone I won’t go into the Meachum’s comic story but just know that they will play an important role.

Scott Nimerfro Dies At Age 54

As with most writers and producers, Scott Nimerfro isn’t a name that I would have known but throughout his career the man worked on many titles that I love and have been a huge part of my life. Pushing Daisies, X-Men, Hannibal and Once Upon A Time are few of such works. Nimero had been suffering from a form of blood cancer. RIP Scott Nimero.

Willem Dafoe Joins Justice League

Zack Snyder is basically just stealing actors from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man – first, J. K. Simmons and now Willem Dafoe. We don’t know what role Dafoe will play in the film but we have been told that, unlike the Green Goblin, he will be a good guy. There are a lot of rumours going around about his potential role – one that I’ve heard and really hope isn’t true is that he will play Green Lantern.

New Warcraft Trailer

The new trailer for Warcraft came out this week and whilst I’ve never played the game, the film looks interesting. The trailer’s pretty cool but the music isn’t really what I would have chosen.

That’s it today but let me know:

Who do you think Willem Dafoe has been cast as in Justice League? Are you a fan of the new Warcraft trailer? Let me know in the comments.

Good morning everyone and I hope you had a good April Fool’s Day. Do people actually celebrate April Fool’s Day? Well, at the very least I hope that none of relationships were irredeemably ruined by pranks. And now the news!

YA Versions of DC Heroes To Hit Shelves

DC’s influence is growing: they have some great TV shows (The Flash, Arrow) and Batman v Superman marked the beginning of their attempt at a cinematic universe a la Marvel. What is DC’s latest venture? A four-book young adult book series centring around Wonder Woman, Superman, Batman and Catwoman. I don’t hate the idea – it certainly feels original – but it’s a strange direction to go in. When it comes down to it, my decision as to whether or not to buy them will come down to how nice the covers are.

Thor 3 May Be The Last Loki Outing

Tom Hiddleston’s Loki was the true star of 2011’s Thor and it now looks like next year’s Thor: Ragnarok may be his last outing as the trickster god. Hiddleston said:

“Thor 3 will be cool because I’ve not done it for four years. I love working with Chris [Hemsworth]. This will be my last time out of the gate.”

but he also said:

“Honestly, I don’t know. They haven’t got their ducks in a row yet. They make it up as they go along.”

so who knows what’s going to happen. Certainly not Tom.

Disney Plans Film About Snow White’s Sister

You’ve probably never heard of Snow White’s sister, Rose Red, but you will soon enough. Disney are currently working on a script for a live-action movie all about Snow White’s not-so-famous sister. The story will tie into the Snow White narrative that we already know and will take place as Snow White succumbs to the sleeping curse.

Suicide Squad Re-Shoots

After Batman v Superman the next DCEU movie on the Warner Bros. roster is Suicide Squad which I suppose means it’s their chance to redeem themselves amongst critics. The studio is going through the incredibly expensive process of re-shooting parts of the movie to inject more comedy into the film lest it be another Batman v Superman. If you’re thinking: the trailer was already pretty funny. Well, apparently all of those jokes in the trailer were all of the jokes in the film. Yikes.

Iron Fist Casting

The upcoming Marvel Netflix series, Iron Fist, has cast its female lead: Jessica Henwick (Game of Thrones) will play  Colleen Wing – a martial artist who becomes friends with the main character. Strangely, she is now not only the second (of two) British actor to join the cast but the second Game of Thrones alum.

That’s all today but if you’ve missed out on any news this week then come back tomorrow morning for the weekly news round-up. Until then:

Do you want to read about your favourite heroes in novel form? Do Suicide Squad re-shoots make you scared for the film or more excited? Will Iron Fist only contain Game of Thrones actors? Let me know in the comments.

What’s New? || Geek News

It’s Sunday – it’s Oscar Sunday and this week has been dominated by the lead up to the Academy Awards but I’ve still got some news for you so let’s just get to it:

Final Daredevil Trailer

The second part of the 2-part Daredevil Season 2 trailer has been released by Netflix and there is a lot of Elektra. I enjoyed Season 1 of Daredevil  but I think it lacked something that made my interest peter out towards the end. The upcoming season promises to be packed full of action, we have: Elektra, The Punisher, The Hand and I believe Stick may be returning. Check out the trailer below.

Finn Jones Cast As Iron Fist

Game Of Thrones’ Finn Jones has officially been cast as Iron Fist in the Marvel-Netflix series of the same name. Iron Fist completes The Defenders: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage & Iron Fist. We first saw Luke Cage in Jessica Jones but his solo outing will be arriving on Netflix soon and Iron Fist will follow.

Marvel’s Most Wanted Gets Official Synopsis

The ABC Marvel show, Marvel’s Most Wanted, has received an official synopsis. It follows Bobbi and Hunter from Agent’s Of Shield after leaving the newly formed S.H.I.E.L.D. The synopsis is:

Centers on Bobbi Morse (aka Mockingbird) and Lance Hunter of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., two ex-spies and ex-spouses who are on the run with no friends, no S.H.I.E.L.D. and a long list of enemies looking to claim the bounty on their heads. Able to trust no one but each other, Bobbi and Hunter form an uneasy alliance with Dominic Fortune, a rogue adventurer with a wealth of resources and even more adversaries, who agrees to protect them so long as they help him with his own agenda. These two heroes will help anyone in need, all while trying to uncover the conspiracy that put their own lives in jeopardy.

Bobbi and Hunter are two of my favourite characters on Agents of Shield so I will be sad to see them go but the relationship between the characters is so strong and also fun that it could be good to see them strike out on their own.

That’s it for today – I know it was a short one but I will be back on Tuesday with more. As usual:

What part of the Daredevil trailer has you most fired up? Does Finn Jones look like an Iron Fist? How are they going to remove Bobbi and Hunter from Agents of Shield? Let me know in the comments.
