Reasons To Be Excited In 2017

By all accounts, 2016 was a rough year. Fortunately, 2017 promises to be a lot better – or at the very least that’s what people are saying and blind faith is currently preferable to painful realism.

At the very least, in our geeky, little bubble, there are plenty of reasons to be excited about the forthcoming year – so many, in fact, that narrowing it down to 17 was a challenge but that is what has happened. Here are 17 things to get excited about this year.

Wonder Woman (2 June)

This is the first time that I’ve truly been excited for a project by the DCEU and I’m really hoping that they don’t screw it up. Just give us a female hero and let her be as bad-ass as she was originally written to be.

Beauty & The Beast (17 March)

Disney classic, music from my childhood, Emma Watson: what isn’t there to love about this movie? Even Gaston looks good (in a he-seems-to-be-a-more-well-rounded-character kind of way, don’t worry – it looks like he’s still a total bastard).

Sense8 (5 May)

After the Christmas special at the end of December, I’m absolutely buzzing for this new season. Sense8 is hope and light but it’s also painful and terribly, terribly sad at times. Essentially, it’s the best thing being broadcast at the moment.

Spider-Man: Homecoming (7 July)

Sure, it’s the third reboot of this hero’s franchise but he’s still my favourite and I still can’t wait to see him again.

Cars 3 (14 July)

Never in a million years would I have thought that any member of the Cars franchise would be making it onto a list like this but… never say never. The first teaser trailer got me hooked and now I absolutely have to see it.

Coco (8 December)

I can’t talk about Cars 3 and miss out the other Pixar release for this year. Not a lot of people are talking about Coco at the moment but it’s about the Mexican Day of the Dead and that alone has me very interested. Plus, it’s Pixar – it’s going to be fantastic.

Orange Is The New Black, Season 5 (June)

The last two episodes of the most recent season of Orange Is The New Black were viewed behind a curtain of tears which is basically the highest praise from me. They ended on a cliffhanger that I couldn’t stop thinking about for days. Dammit, now I’m thinking about it again.

Star Trek: Discovery (May)

I am a part of a new generation of Star Trek fans that jumped onboard after the Pine movies. That huge market is probably one of the main reasons that they decided to launch a new series and I am very grateful for that.

The Oscars (26/2)

Th glitz, the glamour, the terrible jokes: I live for this award ceremony. It’s the one night of the year that I can successfully pull an all-nighter so that I can watch the entire show all the way from England.

Stranger Things (TBC)

I don’t know where they’re going to go from the first season but I am more than happy to find out.

Justice League (17 November)

My hopes for this movie are slightly lower than those for Wonder Woman but I’m trying to stay optimistic. Most of the characters seem great (with the exception of Batfleck) and if Warner Bros. can get their act together, this could be something amazing.

Hamilton, London (21/11)

I’ve adored this musical for the last year and it is finally coming to London! I won’t be able to afford tickets but at least I’ll be able to walk past the theatre…

Iron Fist (17 March)

Judging by Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage, this show is going to be amazing. What’s more, it’s the final piece of the puzzle before we get to…

The Defenders (TBC)

I love what Marvel are doing with their Netflix series and this seems like it’s going to be beyond amazing.

Star Wars VIII (15 December)

My appreciation for the Star Wars franchise is an even more recent development than my enjoyment of Star Trek. For the first time, I will be waiting with anticipation alongside the other fanboys and fangirls.

Fast & Furious 8 (14 April)

I’m not going to pretend that these movies mean anything more to me than 2 hours of ridiculous stunts and cheesy one-liners but sometimes the world needs crazy stunts and cheesy one-liners.

Logan (2 March)

Is it weird that I feel a little bit scared of this movie? Like I know it’s going to be brilliant but I think that if Logan dies, a little part of my heart may also die.

So those are the 17 things that I am most looking forward to in 2017.

What are you looking forward to? Is there anything on my list that has you pointedly unenthused? Let me know in the comments.

Weekly Round-Up || Geek News

Happy Sunday! It’s Tony’s day for all of you theatre geeks (that’s me, I’m the theatre geek) and it’s also the day where we go back over the week’s news and talk about what happened.

Best Piece Of News

Hayley Atwell, a.k.a Peggy Carter herself, is not on-board with Cap’s new romance. Despite all of the amazing elements that make up Captain America: Civil War and make it Marvel’s best film to date, there was one weird story-line that they tried to push. I am, of course, talking about Steve kissing Sharon Carter mere hours after burying her aunt who, incidentally, was the love of his life. Fans weren’t happy about it and Atwell had this to say in an interview with IGN:

“Well, first of all she’d be turning over in her grave. She’d be like ‘no.’ And she’d inject herself with the blue serum and become a super villain. She’d break out of her coffin and ground [Sharon]. She’d ground her. Then she’d kick Steve’s ass as well.”

Worst Piece Of News

This week was actually kind of great so I’m scraping the bottom of the barrel here. It was revealed that Superman was being cast for a role in the second season of Supergirl. The show purposely avoided showing the Man of Steel’s face in the first season because this show isn’t about him. There is a theme that runs throughout the show of Kara trying to prove herself to be a hero and there is a worry that Superman could overshadow that. With that said, Kara is such a fantastic and established character that I don’t think it would happen at this point.

Most Bizarre Piece Of News

In this week’s episode of What the hell is the DCEU up to now? the Justice League movie was re-titled. The film has gone from Justice League: Part 1 to… Justice League. I mean, I don’t… Well, it happened. This could suggest that they’re slowing down a little bit with their plans and perhaps in the wake of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, they’ve decided to try their hands at slightly less convoluted plots.

And Everything Else…

  • Zootopia Hits $1 Billion
  • John Boyega In Pacific Rim 2
  • Legend Of Tarzan Trailer
  • Legends of Tomorrow Adds Vixen
  • New Hogwarts Image
  • First Look At Pixar Short
  • China Saves Warcraft
  • No More Owls In Hogwarts
  • First Suits Promo

If those headlines weren’t quite the informative nuggets that you were looking for then you can find out more about all of those stories right here but until next time:

Do you believe the Sharon/Steve romance? Did you want to see Superman’s face? Are you still holding on to hope for the DCEU? Let me know in the comments.

What’s New? || Geek News

Happy Tuesday, ZootopiaJustice LeaguePacific Rim… there’s just too much to talk about today so let’s get right into it.

Zootopia Passes $1 Billion

Zootopia has officially passed the $1 billion mark at the box office and is the fourth animated movie to ever do so. The film was a gorgeous imagination of an all-animal metropolis and I loved it (you can read our review here). As much as we seem to be having a problem with sequels that nobody wants at the moment, this is one world that I would like to re-visit in the future.

Justice League Re-Titled

The upcoming Justice League film has now been re-titled. What is that new title? Wait for it… Justice League. Yeah, it’s called Justice League. It was previously called Justice League Part 1 which raises the question of what has changed? Will it no longer be a two-parter and is this evidence that Warner Bros. are finally noticing that their DCEU is crumbling all around them?

Hayley Atwell Is Not A Fan Of Cap’s New Romance

Captain America: Civil War was easily Marvel’s best film to date but there was one moment that felt very off. Captain America kisses Sharon Carter, niece of Peggy Carter, mere hours after Peggy’s funeral. A lot of fans did not like it and apparently neither did Peggy Carter herself, Hayley Atwell. During an interview with IGN she had this to say on the subject:

“Well, first of all she’d be turning over in her grave. She’d be like ‘no.’ And she’d inject herself with the blue serum and become a super villain. She’d break out of her coffin and ground [Sharon]. She’d ground her. Then she’d kick Steve’s ass as well.”

John Boyega Cast In Pacific Rim 2

John Boyega has landed the role of the protagonist of the sequel to the popular blockbuster, Pacific Rim. The film will begin production later this year and Boyega will play the son of Idris Elba’s character from the first film.

Superman Will Appear In Supergirl

If you watched the first season of Supergirl on CBS then you would have noticed that the Man of Steel appeared but never showed his face. Going into season 2, it has been confirmed that Superman will reveal himself. He will appear in the first two episodes of the season and casting has already begun. A lot of people are hoping that Smallville‘s Tom Welling will reprise the role but there is currently no news.

That’s it today but come back on Thursday for even more news. Until then:

Do you want a Zootopia sequel? Are you excited to see more of John Boyega? Who do you want to be cast as Superman? Let me know in the comments.

What’s New? || Geek News

Goooood morning, I hope you’re having a wonderful Thursday. If you’re not then I’m sure reading about all the things that have happened in the last couple of days will cheer you up. Or it won’t but either way that’s what I going to talk about now.

Iron Fist Casting

Iron Fist will be the last of the Marvel Netflix series before they all team up in The Defenders and already this week we’ve seen the release of set images featuring Finn Jones’ Danny Rand. This week we heard casting news regarding a bunch of Meachums – David Wenham as Harold Meachum, Jessica Stroup as Joy Meachum and Tom Pelphrey as Ward Meachum. As this is a spoiler-free zone I won’t go into the Meachum’s comic story but just know that they will play an important role.

Scott Nimerfro Dies At Age 54

As with most writers and producers, Scott Nimerfro isn’t a name that I would have known but throughout his career the man worked on many titles that I love and have been a huge part of my life. Pushing Daisies, X-Men, Hannibal and Once Upon A Time are few of such works. Nimero had been suffering from a form of blood cancer. RIP Scott Nimero.

Willem Dafoe Joins Justice League

Zack Snyder is basically just stealing actors from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man – first, J. K. Simmons and now Willem Dafoe. We don’t know what role Dafoe will play in the film but we have been told that, unlike the Green Goblin, he will be a good guy. There are a lot of rumours going around about his potential role – one that I’ve heard and really hope isn’t true is that he will play Green Lantern.

New Warcraft Trailer

The new trailer for Warcraft came out this week and whilst I’ve never played the game, the film looks interesting. The trailer’s pretty cool but the music isn’t really what I would have chosen.

That’s it today but let me know:

Who do you think Willem Dafoe has been cast as in Justice League? Are you a fan of the new Warcraft trailer? Let me know in the comments.

What’s New? || Geek News

It’s Sunday and I don’t know about you but this weekend has just been a blur of Zootropolis and Daredevil for me but let’s move away from that now.

Daredevil Season 2 Was Released

What? Come on, I’m not a trustworthy person. On Friday morning the second season of Daredevil was released worldwide on Netflix. This season sees new characters, new threats and even new costumes for the series. Of course we have a full review for you but otherwise head over to Netflix and check it out.

Luke Cage Teaser

After my 12 hour binge of the entire second season of Daredevil I was surprised to see a familiar face popping up on my screen. The first Luke Cage teaser ahead of the series’ premiere in September was released with the second season of Daredevil. You can watch it for yourself but I’m excited about it.

Amber Heard To Play Queen Mera In Justice League

Amber Heard (Drive Angry, Never Back Down) has officially confirmed that she will playing Queen Mera – Aquaman’s wife – in Justice League: part 1 and the Aquaman film. I genuinely have no real feelings about this casting and I’m not even sure how involved a character she is (particularly in Justice League) but we’ll see her in action soon enough.

Netflix Picks Up The Little Prince

After Paramount dropped the animated feature, The Little Prince, Netflix have now picked it up and will be distributing it sometime this year. The film was supposed to hit cinemas two days ago and had already received mixed reviews but now it will be available for streaming on Netflix at a date currently unknown. I will say that I fell in love with the trailer from the first time that I saw it.

X-Men: Apocalypse Trailer

There’s a new trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse which is great because I somehow forgot that this film was even happening this year. It’s full of action and dread and some very expensive visual effects.

So, I will be back again next week with more news and reviews and all of the other things that I do on this site but until then:

What did you think of Daredevil? Do you care about the casting of Mera? Did you forget about X-Men in all of the other superhero films happening this year? Let me know in the comments.

What’s New? || Geek News

Merry Tuesday everybody, today it’s all about Marvel and DC.

No Green Lantern Until Justice League Part 2… Maybe.

If you’ve been paying attention to the news surrounding Justice League Part 1, then you will have noticed the conspicuous absence of one member of the League. Honestly, I just thought that the studio weren’t prepared to go anywhere near the character after the Ryan Reynolds fiasco of 2011 and I wasn’t far off. Warner Bros. president, Greg Silverman, has said that they want to treat the character with the ‘reverence’ he deserves. Unfortunately that means that the earliest he will see the big screen is in the 2019 Justice League sequel or potentially in a different film, after that one.

Zendaya Cast In New Spiderman Film

We don’t know much about the new Spiderman reboot but it has now been confirmed that Zendaya (Shake It Up!, K.C. Undercover) will be joining the cast as a character called Michelle. Who is Michelle? We have no idea, but this will be Zendaya’s first non-Disney film role. Having grown up watching her on Disney channel, I really hope she does well.

J. K. Simmons Cast As Commissioner Gordon

Zack Snyder has cast none other than J. K. Simmons in the role of Commissioner Gordon for the new Justice League film. He played a great John Jonah Jameson Jr. (even typing that, I have to stop five times) in the original Spiderman franchise. Gary Oldman was the last person to hold this role in the Christopher Nolan trilogy so J. K. Simmons is  quite a change.

That’s all for today but I’ll be back tomorrow with a little guide to Allegiant before its UK release this week and there’ll be more news on Thursday.

Are you ready for another incarnation of the Green Lantern? Do you want to see another Spiderman reboot? J. K. Simmons moving from Marvel to DC, brilliant or awful? Let me know in the comments.

What’s New? || Geek News

It’s Sunday, and in this final Geek News of the week we’ve got everything from Ghostbusters to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Let’s just jump into it:

Every Character To Return For Once Upon A Time Episode 100

Once Upon A Time returns from its mid-season hiatus tonight with its hundredth episode which is said to be full of some great surprises. I’m not sure how they’re going to do it considering the scope of the show but apparently we can expect to see every character this episode. Among other surprises we’ve also been promised a unique perspective of Storybrooke.

Ghostbusters Trailer Released

This week the trailer for Ghostbusters was released to mixed reception: some people loved it, others hated it. At the time of posting this, the Youtube video has more dislikes than likes but what do you think? I confess that I’ve never seen the original Ghostbusters films but from the trailer, this looks like a decent film:

Zootopia Sets Disney Box Office Record

It looks as though Zootopia (or Zootropolis in the UK) is going to take the record for Disney Animation’s biggest opening away from Frozen. The current projections for Zooptopia are $70-75 million, beating Frozen’s $67.4 million. I can’t wait for this film to hit the UK later this month, if you haven’t seen anything about it yet then look it up – it stars Jason Bateman, Ginnifer Goodwin and Idris Elba amongst others.

Spiderman Spin-Off, Venom, In The Works

With Sony’s revival of Spiderman, they’re also bringing back a project that they had put aside. Venom will be getting his own spin-off movie: as far as the movies go, we first saw Venom as one of the numerous villains in Spiderman 3 (played by Topher Grace) but they may go in a different direction for the movie. More recently in the comics, Venom has become more of an anti-hero than a villain but it’s unclear what direction they’re going in.

Flash & Cyborg In Batman v Superman

Where it had been previously said that The Flash and Cyborg would only appear in the Justice League films, it has been confirmed that they will now have cameos in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. This is amazing and I don’t know why but I’m still not excited about this film!

That’s it today and this week but there will be more news on Tuesday morning so check that out. Until then:

Will you be tuning into Once Upon A Time Tonight? Any strong feelings about Ghostbusters? Do you want to see an anti-hero Venom? Let me know in the comments.
