Reasons To Be Excited In 2017

By all accounts, 2016 was a rough year. Fortunately, 2017 promises to be a lot better – or at the very least that’s what people are saying and blind faith is currently preferable to painful realism.

At the very least, in our geeky, little bubble, there are plenty of reasons to be excited about the forthcoming year – so many, in fact, that narrowing it down to 17 was a challenge but that is what has happened. Here are 17 things to get excited about this year.

Wonder Woman (2 June)

This is the first time that I’ve truly been excited for a project by the DCEU and I’m really hoping that they don’t screw it up. Just give us a female hero and let her be as bad-ass as she was originally written to be.

Beauty & The Beast (17 March)

Disney classic, music from my childhood, Emma Watson: what isn’t there to love about this movie? Even Gaston looks good (in a he-seems-to-be-a-more-well-rounded-character kind of way, don’t worry – it looks like he’s still a total bastard).

Sense8 (5 May)

After the Christmas special at the end of December, I’m absolutely buzzing for this new season. Sense8 is hope and light but it’s also painful and terribly, terribly sad at times. Essentially, it’s the best thing being broadcast at the moment.

Spider-Man: Homecoming (7 July)

Sure, it’s the third reboot of this hero’s franchise but he’s still my favourite and I still can’t wait to see him again.

Cars 3 (14 July)

Never in a million years would I have thought that any member of the Cars franchise would be making it onto a list like this but… never say never. The first teaser trailer got me hooked and now I absolutely have to see it.

Coco (8 December)

I can’t talk about Cars 3 and miss out the other Pixar release for this year. Not a lot of people are talking about Coco at the moment but it’s about the Mexican Day of the Dead and that alone has me very interested. Plus, it’s Pixar – it’s going to be fantastic.

Orange Is The New Black, Season 5 (June)

The last two episodes of the most recent season of Orange Is The New Black were viewed behind a curtain of tears which is basically the highest praise from me. They ended on a cliffhanger that I couldn’t stop thinking about for days. Dammit, now I’m thinking about it again.

Star Trek: Discovery (May)

I am a part of a new generation of Star Trek fans that jumped onboard after the Pine movies. That huge market is probably one of the main reasons that they decided to launch a new series and I am very grateful for that.

The Oscars (26/2)

Th glitz, the glamour, the terrible jokes: I live for this award ceremony. It’s the one night of the year that I can successfully pull an all-nighter so that I can watch the entire show all the way from England.

Stranger Things (TBC)

I don’t know where they’re going to go from the first season but I am more than happy to find out.

Justice League (17 November)

My hopes for this movie are slightly lower than those for Wonder Woman but I’m trying to stay optimistic. Most of the characters seem great (with the exception of Batfleck) and if Warner Bros. can get their act together, this could be something amazing.

Hamilton, London (21/11)

I’ve adored this musical for the last year and it is finally coming to London! I won’t be able to afford tickets but at least I’ll be able to walk past the theatre…

Iron Fist (17 March)

Judging by Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage, this show is going to be amazing. What’s more, it’s the final piece of the puzzle before we get to…

The Defenders (TBC)

I love what Marvel are doing with their Netflix series and this seems like it’s going to be beyond amazing.

Star Wars VIII (15 December)

My appreciation for the Star Wars franchise is an even more recent development than my enjoyment of Star Trek. For the first time, I will be waiting with anticipation alongside the other fanboys and fangirls.

Fast & Furious 8 (14 April)

I’m not going to pretend that these movies mean anything more to me than 2 hours of ridiculous stunts and cheesy one-liners but sometimes the world needs crazy stunts and cheesy one-liners.

Logan (2 March)

Is it weird that I feel a little bit scared of this movie? Like I know it’s going to be brilliant but I think that if Logan dies, a little part of my heart may also die.

So those are the 17 things that I am most looking forward to in 2017.

What are you looking forward to? Is there anything on my list that has you pointedly unenthused? Let me know in the comments.

Unpopular Opinions: Orange Is The New Black Season 4

Season 4 of Orange Is The New Black was amazing. I loved it to the point where reviewing it would be pointless because I would literally just be showering it with praise. After watching the season over the course of 36 hours I was sure that I wasn’t alone in that opinion but apparently I was wrong.

To clarify, the majority of people that have watched it have in fact loved it – critics and casual spectators alike – but the very intense fan communities that I consider myself to be a part of do not share that opinion.

A major criticism of this season was the killing off of the character, Poussey. People complained that it was a distasteful exploitation of the Black Lives Matter movement whilst also continuing the damaging trope that occurs consistently in television of killing off gay characters.

I completely disagree.

As I watched the episode where Poussey died, there was a sense of inevitability – you knew it was coming but you were powerless to stop it and that is one of the show’s longest running themes: powerlessness. As a prisoner you have no real power, your fate is in the hands of authority figures and you can only hope that they will assert their power in a fair way.

Poussey couldn’t have saved herself; Taystee couldn’t have saved her; and as much as we wanted to, we couldn’t have saved her.

A big argument is that the show could have killed off anybody. They didn’t have to be black or gay or even happy? Except the problem with that is then it wouldn’t have had as big an effect on the public. As far as TV shows go, Orange Is The New Black, has a huge percentage of queer characters in their show so I can’t imagine that sexuality played a big part in their decision to kill Poussey.

As far the idea of the show exploiting Black Lives Matter goes, to say that would be the cheapen the whole thing. Rather than exploiting it the show was trying to showcase it. Listening to the news is hard: there is so much death and violence every single day that you stop hearing the names and you cease to think of the dead as real people. Fans of the show have seen Poussey’s life over the span of three years and so you can’t switch off – you feel pain and you recognise the injustice of it all.

I guess what I’m saying is that I grieved over Poussey’s death and that’s a sign of a truly great show.

What did you think of this season? Do you completely disagree with me? Do you think that they could have put forward their idea without killing off Poussey? Let me know in the comments.

Weekly Round-Up || Geek News

Happy Sunday everybody, so much has happened this week: trailers, casting, pilots and cancellations – let’s talk about that.

Best Piece of News

This week we heard more about the casting of Marvel’s upcoming film, Black Panther. Lupita Nyong’o is in talks to star in the movie and Michael B. Jordan has officially been cast in an unknown role (although rumours say that he will be the villain). Until Captain America: Civil War Black Panther was pretty unknown in mainstream media and I was worried that his film wouldn’t do justice to the character. With Ryan Coogler on board to direct and this new casting news, all of those fears are gone.

Worst Piece of News

The reviews for X-Men: Apocalypse are in and it looks like it could be this year’s Batman v Superman for Marvel. The X-Men films have always been one of the strongest superhero movie franchises (if you pretend that the Wolverine films don’t exist) and it’s terrible to see them stumble. Still we can all judge it for ourselves next week.

Most Bizarre Piece of News

Ice Age: Collision Course released another trailer this week and… I liked it? There’s no doubt in my mind that Ice Age should have ended after the third film but they keep making movies and I keep enjoying them. You can watch the trailer again here:

And Everything Else…

  • There Will Be A Black Widow Movie (Eventually)
  • Infinity War To Star Captain Marvel
  • Civil War Wins Box Office
  • Orange Is The New Black Trailer
  • Assassin’s Creed Trailer
  • Supergirl Flies To The CW
  • Powerless Pilot Picked
  • Space Jam Director Predicts Doom
  • Agent Carter Cancelled

If those headlines weren’t quite the informative nuggets that you were looking for then you can find out more about all of those stories right here but until next time:

Are you psyched for Black Panther? Will you be watching X-Men: Apocalypse? How many of the Ice Age movies have you watched? Do you still like them? Let me know in the comments.

What’s New? || Geek News

Good morning people, it’s been a while since I had a bunch of trailers for you. Have you missed it? Either way, I have a bunch of trailers for you.

Orange Is The New Black Season 4 Trailer

There is just over a month until the new season of Orange is the New Black hits Netflix and we finally got the trailer for it. Along with Sense8, this is probably my favourite original series on Netflix and judging by this trailer, the new season looks intense. There’s a lot of pain and anger but what’s missing? One notable absence from the trailer was Nicky who got transferred last season. Still, we never saw Dong in the trailers for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt but he turned up so let’s hope that Nicky makes a return.

X-Men: Apocalypse Reviews

The reviews for X-Men: Apocalypse are in and they’re… mixed. I don’t want to say that they’re negative because that’s a standard that has now been set by Batman v Superman. Although some reviews have actually compared it to Batman v Superman… Generally they’re not amazing but there are some that say it’s okay. Either way, I think it’s worth checking out for yourself when it comes out next week.

Assassin’s Creed Trailer

The first trailer for the film adaptation of Assassin’s Creed came out in the early hours of this morning and I’m cautiously hopeful. Game adaptations don’t have a particularly good reputation and they don’t usually land for regular viewers or fans of the original game. Still, Michael Fassbender is a great actor and the trailer looks decent.

Supergirl May Move To The CW

Following on from the brilliant first season of the show, Supergirl has run into unexpected trouble in securing its second season. There were initial talks about moving production from L.A. to Vancouver to save money but now it looks like it might even move networks. After crossing over with The Flash it wouldn’t be completely unprecedented for it to make this move and it would certainly make more crossovers in the Arrowverse easier.

That’s it today but we’ll be back on Sunday with more news. Until then:

Will you watch X-Men: Apocalypse in spite of the reviews? What did you think of the Assassin’s Creed trailer? Did you like the first season of Supergirl? Let me know in the comments.

What’s New? || Geek News

Merry Tuesday everybody, as a UK resident who watched the Oscars ceremony live I’m still exhausted but the ceremony was amazing. By now I’m sure you already know who won and who lost so I won’t bore you by repeating all of that. Instead, let’s take a look at some of the other things that happened in the last few days.

Fox Announces Two More Marvel Films

After the success of Deadpool it makes sense that Fox would want to get as many Marvel films out as possible. Whilst they haven’t released the names of the projects, Fox have confirmed that they will be releasing two Marvel properties on October 6th 2017 and January 12th 2018. I’m assuming that one of them is the perpetually-delayed Gambit film and the other one may be that Deadpool sequel we’ve been hearing so much about.

New Orange Is The New Black Teaser

Season 4 of Orange Is The New Black will be available on Netflix from June 17 which feels like forever but they’ve released another teaser to keep us excited. I have to say that this one didn’t really hit me like they usually do but that could be the sleep deprivation talking. Check it out yourself:

Pixar Have Won Their 16th Academy Award

I know, I know, I said no Oscar talk but you have to let me congratulate Pixar who, with Inside Out winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, have now received a total of 16 Academy Awards – 8 for Best Animated Feature. I love Pixar and I loved Inside Out: with the exception of Leonardo DiCaprio finally winning Best Actor, this is the award that I was most happy about.

New Batman v Superman Clip

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice arrives at our cinema screens this month and on the Jimmy Kimmel show they premiered a new clip. I have to say, when I first heard the title of this film I was like, “well, that’ll be a short movie”. Superman is clearly going to beat Batman in a fight, or is he? This clip is the first footage we’ve seen of the two actually going head to head against one another and the Dark Knight seems to have some tricks up his sleeve.

That’s all for today, but of course you can come back tomorrow for a feature piece or maybe just wait until Thursday for another Geek News. Until whenever:

Did you have a favourite Oscar moment? Are you still interested in a Gambit movie? Is OITNB losing quality in these later seasons? Let me know in the comments.

What’s New? || Geek News

It’s Sunday and the final news round-up of the week. There have definitely been some cool things happening over the last few days so without further ado:

Orange Is The New Black Renewed For 3 Seasons

The Netflix series, Orange Is The New Black, has been renewed for not one but three seasons so all OINTB fans (myself included) have years of television to look forward to. Although I am starting to wonder when exactly Piper’s going to get out of prison but I’m hoping that this three season renewal means that the showrunners have a plan set out.

Avengers Academy Mobile Game

Marvel’s Avengers Academy was launched earlier this week – the game sets the Avengers in a college environment where they go to classes but also kick ass. No complaints here. Initially I didn’t have the energy to care about this game because there are just so many superhero apps but the voice cast for this game is brilliant: Colton Haynes, John Cena, Alison Brie, Dave Franco, Alexandra Daddario… If anything, I’d give it a try because it’s free.

Pixar’s 30!

This week Pixar celebrated it’s 30th birthday. The animation studio has produced some amazing, unforgettable characters and made me blubber like a baby too many times to count. This year Pixar will release Finding Dory, a film that promises to please. Also, in the next week there will be a feature on this site about Pixar so keep an eye out.

That’s all for this week but don’t even worry about it because Geek News will be back on Tuesday.

Are you going to download the Avengers’ mobile app? Do you want three more seasons of Orange Is The New Black? What’s your favourite Pixar film? Let me know in the comments.
