Reasons To Be Excited In 2017

By all accounts, 2016 was a rough year. Fortunately, 2017 promises to be a lot better – or at the very least that’s what people are saying and blind faith is currently preferable to painful realism.

At the very least, in our geeky, little bubble, there are plenty of reasons to be excited about the forthcoming year – so many, in fact, that narrowing it down to 17 was a challenge but that is what has happened. Here are 17 things to get excited about this year.

Wonder Woman (2 June)

This is the first time that I’ve truly been excited for a project by the DCEU and I’m really hoping that they don’t screw it up. Just give us a female hero and let her be as bad-ass as she was originally written to be.

Beauty & The Beast (17 March)

Disney classic, music from my childhood, Emma Watson: what isn’t there to love about this movie? Even Gaston looks good (in a he-seems-to-be-a-more-well-rounded-character kind of way, don’t worry – it looks like he’s still a total bastard).

Sense8 (5 May)

After the Christmas special at the end of December, I’m absolutely buzzing for this new season. Sense8 is hope and light but it’s also painful and terribly, terribly sad at times. Essentially, it’s the best thing being broadcast at the moment.

Spider-Man: Homecoming (7 July)

Sure, it’s the third reboot of this hero’s franchise but he’s still my favourite and I still can’t wait to see him again.

Cars 3 (14 July)

Never in a million years would I have thought that any member of the Cars franchise would be making it onto a list like this but… never say never. The first teaser trailer got me hooked and now I absolutely have to see it.

Coco (8 December)

I can’t talk about Cars 3 and miss out the other Pixar release for this year. Not a lot of people are talking about Coco at the moment but it’s about the Mexican Day of the Dead and that alone has me very interested. Plus, it’s Pixar – it’s going to be fantastic.

Orange Is The New Black, Season 5 (June)

The last two episodes of the most recent season of Orange Is The New Black were viewed behind a curtain of tears which is basically the highest praise from me. They ended on a cliffhanger that I couldn’t stop thinking about for days. Dammit, now I’m thinking about it again.

Star Trek: Discovery (May)

I am a part of a new generation of Star Trek fans that jumped onboard after the Pine movies. That huge market is probably one of the main reasons that they decided to launch a new series and I am very grateful for that.

The Oscars (26/2)

Th glitz, the glamour, the terrible jokes: I live for this award ceremony. It’s the one night of the year that I can successfully pull an all-nighter so that I can watch the entire show all the way from England.

Stranger Things (TBC)

I don’t know where they’re going to go from the first season but I am more than happy to find out.

Justice League (17 November)

My hopes for this movie are slightly lower than those for Wonder Woman but I’m trying to stay optimistic. Most of the characters seem great (with the exception of Batfleck) and if Warner Bros. can get their act together, this could be something amazing.

Hamilton, London (21/11)

I’ve adored this musical for the last year and it is finally coming to London! I won’t be able to afford tickets but at least I’ll be able to walk past the theatre…

Iron Fist (17 March)

Judging by Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage, this show is going to be amazing. What’s more, it’s the final piece of the puzzle before we get to…

The Defenders (TBC)

I love what Marvel are doing with their Netflix series and this seems like it’s going to be beyond amazing.

Star Wars VIII (15 December)

My appreciation for the Star Wars franchise is an even more recent development than my enjoyment of Star Trek. For the first time, I will be waiting with anticipation alongside the other fanboys and fangirls.

Fast & Furious 8 (14 April)

I’m not going to pretend that these movies mean anything more to me than 2 hours of ridiculous stunts and cheesy one-liners but sometimes the world needs crazy stunts and cheesy one-liners.

Logan (2 March)

Is it weird that I feel a little bit scared of this movie? Like I know it’s going to be brilliant but I think that if Logan dies, a little part of my heart may also die.

So those are the 17 things that I am most looking forward to in 2017.

What are you looking forward to? Is there anything on my list that has you pointedly unenthused? Let me know in the comments.

Wait, What Happened? || Geek News

There’s a xenophobic, misogynistic, orange buffoon moving into the White House but focusing on that makes me angry. I don’t want to be angry so let’s talk about happy things like the news you may have missed during the media coverage of this trainwreck election.

Elektra Will Return In The Defenders

Image result for elektra natchios netflixPeople were raving about The Punisher but Elektra was definitely the stand-out character in Season 2 of Daredevil for me. The last we saw of her she had died saving Matt, and members of The Hand were attempting to bring her back to life. Fortunately (or maybe unfortunately considering their alignment) it looks like they were successful and it has been confirmed that she will return to the MCU in The Defenders. How big a role she’ll play is unknown but with only 8 episodes and so many huge characters, I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Big Bang Theory Prequel Series

Image result for sheldon cooperCBS is developing a spin-off series based on The Big Bang Theory‘s Dr. Sheldon Cooper because God knows we couldn’t just let the series die. It is said to be a single-camera comedy series that will follow a young, possibly teenaged, Sheldon. With The Big Bang Theory in its tenth series and no renewal as of yet, it looks like this could be the end for the show and this new series is possibly their attempt and creating a legacy.

Halle Berry Movie Removed From Release Schedule

Remember that Halle Berry movie, Kidnap, that was slated to come out in less than a month? You know, the one that was essentially a gender-swapped reboot of Taken? No? Well don’t worry about it, Relativity have removed it from their release schedule and there’s no saying if it’s ever coming back. The studio has been facing serious financial issues recently and this seems to be one of the consequences. However, if you’re now curious about what could have been you can watch the trailer below:

Who are you looking forward to seeing in the Defenders? Are you a fan of this new Big Bang Theory spin-off idea? Would you like to see Kidnap get a future release date with somebody else? Let me know in the comments.

Wait, What Happened? || Geek News

With one week until the US elections, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are dominating the news cycle and as somebody in the UK who is largely unaffected by the results, I’m sitting back and loving all of it. However, there is other news – cooler news. If you don’t know what I’m talking about and you find yourself asking: wait, what happened? I’ve got you covered.

The Defenders Run Will Be 8 Episodes

Marvel have a pretty solid formula in both their films and series but they are straying from it with the upcoming series: The Defenders. Whilst their other Netflix series have had 13 episode seasons, The Defenders will only be 8 episodes long.

I have mixed feelings on this. Obviously I want as much of this show as possible but if they only have 8 episodes of material then I wouldn’t want it stretched out to 13 and risk losing quality. If that dampened your excitement for the show maybe these new set photos will cheer you up.

Disney Developing Live-Action Snow White Movie

Image result for snow whiteDisney are roaring ahead with their live-action remakes and the next classic in their sights is Snow WhiteThe Girl on the Train screenwriter, Erin Cressida Wilson, is in negotiations to write the script with Benk Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land) attached as songwriters. The movie will include some of the original music but new songs are also being written.

In recent years there have been two separate attempts at a live-action Snow White in Mirror, Mirror and Snow White & the Huntsman but neither really captured the magic of Disney’s animated version. Hopefully Disney won’t fall short of their own original.

The Flash Loses Its Second Director

Image result for rick famuyiwaRick Famuyiwa has become the second director this year to leave ‘The Flash’ movie over creative differences. I’m trying to have faith in the DCEU, I really am, but they make it so difficult. I mean, what are Warner Bros. doing to these directors? Just let them make a nice movie!

The film was set to begin production early next year and was slated for a March 2018 release but whilst Warner Bros. are yet to release a statement, it seems unlikely that that will happen.

Do you wish that the Defenders was longer? Are you tired of Disney remakes? Do you think that The Flash movie will get its act together in time for a 2018 release? Let me know in the comments.

What’s New? || Geek News

Welcome to weekend – obviously the big news is that The Jungle Book came out yesterday which means I’m going to have to find something else to obsess about but you can read our review now. So, what else has been going on?

Four Avatar Sequels

That film that came out in 2009 that everybody watched but nobody remembers a single thing about? Well, we can expect four more. James Cameron has been promising three sequels to Avatar for as long as anybody can remember but he says that there will now be four with the first coming out in 2018. So five movies starting from 2009 with a nine year gap… we should be done by 2045. Although Cameron seems to be speeding up the production process now and the final film is currently scheduled for 2023.

Benedict Cumberbatch To Play The Grinch

Illumination, the team behind Despicable Me, are making a CG version of The Grinch Who Stole Christmas and Benedict Cumberbatch will be voicing The Grinch. We can’t seem to get away from Cumberbatch at the moment – if you haven’t seen the trailer for Doctor Strange yet, it looks like nothing Marvel have ever done before.

Deadpool Sequel Is Coming

People have been talking about the sequel to Deadpool ever since the first film came out but it is now officially confirmed by the studio that there will be a sequel to the film. Better yet, the creative team that made the first one so great are back for this outing. Ryan Reynolds will return as Wade Wilson, Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick as writers and Tim Miller as director.

The Defenders Has Showrunners

The Defenders will see the Marvel Netflix heroes: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist unite. The show will begin shooting at the end of the year and it has now found its showrunners in Daredevil‘s showrunners – Douglas Petrie and Marco Ramirez.

That’s it today but there will be an entire weekly round-up tomorrow.

Do you want one Avatar sequel, let alone four? How do you feel about Benedict Cumberbatch as the Grinch? Let me know in the comments.
